The America Reads Challenge program at Louisiana State University at Eunice is entitled "The Reading Tutor Program." Currently there are approximately 10 students serving 5 area elementary schools for students in kindergarten through grade 3. This will utilize approximately half of our increase in Federal Work Study funding. The principals and teachers of the schools contacted were very enthusiastic about the program. The students selected were anxious to participate and felt they would gain valuable experience in working directly with students in the classroom and through individual contact.

Prior to being assigned to the schools, FWS students attended orientation sessions to acquaint them with tutoring techniques. The students were given a reference booklet reiterating information discussed. Guidelines were also given on scheduling work time, turning in time sheets, dress code, and deportment. Transportation is handled by the tutors, however the University will make arrangements for those students without transportation.

Follow up meetings during the semester will be held with the tutors to share information, experiences, lend support and address any areas of concern. Approximately thirty individuals from the LSUE faculty and staff will also volunteer an hour per week reading to area students in order to help expand the students' reading skills. The University is committed to the America Reads Challenge by providing both tutors and volunteers to the local community.

Here at SLU we are serving six schools with around thirty-five tutors. The response has been tremendous as we have received more than 500 referrals of students who need tutoring in our area. We are also happy to have several volunteer tutors who are donating their time to help us out. Most of our tutoring is done at the students school during the day in a place that is convenient for the teacher.
